Lee Fike - Cooler Review

In 2010 I had the desire to open a coffee bean business and in pursuit of that I of course needed the tools and turned to "RK" for those tools. I purchased the 6# drum roaster kit and the "RK cooler". Of course for the cooler I had to wait I try to be a patient person but I bugged Shane I'm sure, Shane is great to deal with and I finally got the "RK cooler".

You probably have heard of the saying: "good things come to those who wait". Let me tell you it was worth the wait. Before getting this cooler I was trying to cool 2# or so of coffee with a oblong shape strainer and a mop bucket using compressed air to cool the beans. the chaff would fly every where, good thing I have a good size back yard, in addition to that problem it was just a pain to do and I was only doing 2# of coffee. There was no way that I was going to try to do 6# of coffee that way.

When I unpacked the "RK cooler"

I was impressed by the quality of the unit and I now have had this unit for a year doing about 6# of coffee twice a week and this cooler is well worth it. To be able to remove the drum roaster from the BBQ and empty it in the "RK cooler" and the beans are cool within 50 sec to the touch I will still leave it running and rub the bean between my hands to get the more chaff off. But I now have to best of both worlds it cools the beans very quickly and I don't have chaff blowing everywhere. Sure its not cheap but for a small business like myself it fits my needs.

In a way I'm glad its not cheap because in alot of ways you get what you pay for. In using this I never have experienced any problems it sits outside covered under the eve of my house next to my coffee roaster bbq and I only have ten rust spots and that is where the wheel mounts attach to to stainless drum and where other spot welds are. I live in the central valley of california where is gets alot of damp fog in the winter. I can probably get rid of those rust spots by rubbing with steel wool and then clear coating it or just by waxing it.

If you are roasting a pound or more of coffee a week I would definitely consider the "RK cooler" is sure saves time, clutter (of having to drag out several different things to get the cooling done) and it is just plain convenient.

Nice unit. This is built sturdy and should last forever. Unfortunately I dropped motor unit while installing and crushed the plastic fan. I will epoxy it together and see if it runs without shaking. You did a wonderful job on the parts no sharp edges and even the drilled holes have no burs. You must have been a machinist or an engineer or just one talented guy. I am not used to seeing quality with everything made in china now a days.

Hey Shane!

Tomorrow is the big day! Grand opening at our 1st farmer's market - final health inspection at 8:30 AM and we will be completely licensed through the city and state as roasters! Deb and I have been working around the clock getting everything ready, Thank you again for all of your help and advice along the way! We will be taking a bunch of pics tomorrow as we will be roasting on site, but am attaching a pic of the roasting setup for you to see. We will touch base with you after the next couple days of markets and let you know how it went. Still have another 30 lbs to roast...and about a million minor last minute things! Thanks Again for helping us get here!

Hi Ron
I couldn't be more pleased with my drum. I finally got it set up last
weekend and have only run 5 roasts through it, but I'm already quite
pleased. You have a great product. Thought I'd send you a picture. you're
welcome to put it on your website. I went with the brinkmann 45k btu grill
from walmart. Great grill. It will hold a temp steady with very little
adjustment. I haven't needed to roast in cold temperatures yet, but I'm
sure it has the power. I keep it at 500 with the three burners at med-low
in ~50 degree ambient temps

Ron and All,

I finished assembly of my RK drum roaster today and I burned it in and I'm ready for my first roast!
I used a 35k BTU Char-grill model from Home Depot and I'm using Ron's gear drive motor which is sweet. The drum spins fast and
smooth and should be quiet enough to hear first crack. I located my thermometer about an inch too high but other than that, I think this is going to be a great little rig. Tip:
If you choose a Char-grill Pro thermometer like I did, use a "step bit" to drill the ~7/8th hole for the threaded mount. Step bits are expensive (about $35) but I use them almost everyday
at work to drill holes of all sizes in sheet metal. It cuts through the Char-grill lid like butter.

When I fired it up, the first thing I noticed was the large amount of heat that it puts out which is a big contrast from my Rosto. I realize this isn't quite a fair comparison, but I can already
tell that I'm going to enjoy roasting outdoors in winter. I played around with the controls while performing the break-in and the controls are sensitive but very responsive. I'm surprised how
quickly the temperature can shift and then hold steady.

Putting one of these together is not difficult, but there are a few considerations that give it a little twist over buying a pure appliance. I ended up pulling out my dremel tool to cut off the
"foot pegs" of the flame diffuser to lower it about an inch. Now it is perfect and enabled me to put the drum down low closer to the flame. When ordering, I told Ron I wanted the motor on the left side, but
I changed my mind during assembly. I really like how Ron designed the hardware to be re-configurable. It was a simple matter to change the motor and switch over to opposite hand. All the holes were
pre-drilled for mounting either side.

I would like to thank Ron for his help along the way. It is evident that he really cares about his drums and drum customers. I will reserve further comment and praise until after such time that I get to sample the fruits of his and my labor. More pictures
