Do you know of anyone that has tried roasting coffee in a tandoor oven? I’m living in India, I plan to buy one of your drum roasters, and I’m hoping to install it into a custom made tandoor oven. Any assistance you can provide would be helpful. Thanks!

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the message. Roasting in a tandoor looks like it might be a bit challenging? There are many who roast in pizza ovens and bread ovens, so it’s certainly possible. Most tandoors I’ve seen are tall and cylindrical. This would seem to be challenging with the bigger drums. Unless you have a special oven, I would say the 2LB or the 4LB would be the largest you could roast with and get even mixing/roasts. I say that with some caution in that we do use the saturation of heat to help roast the coffee. Unless you were in a sealed tandoor, you would rely upon heat radiating up from the coals, and probably up near the top. So, if you could achieve say 400F at the top of the oven where the coffee will sit, then it would probably work fine.
On a side note, there are a few that I know of who roast over fire pits, and campfires. Don’t forget that’s the most common way in the world to roast coffee in the first place… in a pan, over a fire.
Thanks Shane
